Smyslem vyhlášení soutěže 5G pro 5 měst byla motivace k rozvoji konceptu SmartCities využívající především technologie prostřednictvím 5G sítě. Do soutěže se přihlásilo 58 samospráv s projekty na testování 5G technologií v různých oblastech. Z nich byla vybrána petice vítězných měst Plzeň, Bílina, Karlovy Vary, Jeseník a Ústí nad Labem, která se tak mohou stát prvními „chytrými městy“ v Česku. Díky jejich zapojení vznikají první české příklady dobré praxe, které významným dílem přispějí k akceleraci zavádění principů SmartCities v České republice.
